Crazy: A Father's Search Through America's Mental Health Madness by Pete Earley describes his family's experience when a son with bi-polar disorder is arrested. Earley, is a journalist formerly with The Washington Post, and his book also includes an investigative report on mental illness and the criminal justice system in Florida.

The Criminal Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project coordinated by the Council of State Governments Justice Center is a national effort to help local, state, and federal policymakers and criminal justice and mental health professionals improve the response to people with mental illnesses who come in contact with the criminal justice system.
